We travelled from Eastern Ontario, Canada to the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum located in Weston, West Virginia. Also known West Virginia Hospital for the insane and when it closed it was named Weston State Hospital. Construction began in 1858 and was interrupted by the Civil War, the completed wing in 1861 was used by both Confederates and Union as a barracks and planning area. Some skirmishes occurred, however there was no battles on site. Post war around 1864 the West Virginia Hospital for the Insane took in its first patients. Renamed after the turn of the century to Weston State Hospital and stayed in operation until 1998. In it's over a century long history the site has seen thousands of deaths, perhaps in the tens of thousands. The exact number is not known, I did find statistics for a month is 1890 which states 11 died in a month, if that were an average, yes over 10,000 deaths. This is the first part of a 5 part review of our investigation.
